The midfielder became our first ever recipient of the prestigious individual award in Paris on Monday evening, beating Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham and Dani Carvajal into second, third and fourth respectively.
Rodrigo becomes first City player to win Ballon d’Or
Speaking in a pre-match press conference on Tuesday ahead of our Carabao Cup trip to Spurs, Guardiola was keen to share his joy after seeing his player receive the iconic prize.
“First of all, of course congratulations to him and all his family and friends,” he said.
“It’s incredible news for him and of course for all of us, all at City and our fans. We’re so proud of him. It’s the first time.
“We could never have imagined years ago that our player would receive this prestigious award.
“We are so delighted to be part of it and to share it with him and yes, hopefully it can give him energy to recover well for next season and be with us again.”
Rodrigo was one of four nominees for the men’s award from City’s squad, with Erling Haaland finishing fifth, Phil Foden 11th and Ruben Dias 23rd.
He was joined at the ceremony by Dias and Kopa Trophy nominee Savinho, who was recognised as the fourth best Under-21 player in world football.
While Rodrigo attended the event without knowing the result of the vote beforehand, Guardiola was keen to see the 28-year-old enjoy the occasion whether or not he emerged victorious.
“For us last season Erling won the Treble, more than 50 goals and I said to him just being there you have to be so happy,” he said.
“I said to Rodri as well if you are in first four it is incredible. It’s a good year so be satisfied.
“Erling should have won or Messi should have won, in the end it’s not important.
“It represents something in world football. With your mates, and teammates have done something really nice.
“Rodri made incredible speech, spoke of family and city but especially Spanish football. I agree with him. Spanish football in the last decade I agree.
“Incredible players and trainers. Winning World Cup and Euros. Never win this before and Rodri is proud and proud of Spanish football.”
Since joining in 2019, Rodrigo has lifted 11 major honours as part of Guardiola’s team.
That includes pivotal goals at key moments, including in the 2023 Champions League final in Istanbul.
As well as being the first ever City player to win the award and first Spanish man since 1960, Rodrigo is a rare type of Ballon d’Or winner given he doesn’t play in an attacking position.
Speaking on stage at the Theatre du Chatelet last night, Rodrigo was quick to thank City for the Club’s help in helping him to grow on and off the pitch.
Guardiola recognised his midfielder’s humility but emphasised his role in our overwhelming success in recent seasons.
“Rodrigo knows he needs this club and team-mates to achieve it, especially holding midfielders,” said Guardiola.
“We are aware we’re not going to play with the best player in the world. Of course, his contribution to our success, everyone knows it.
“Centre-backs have won this award in the past. Of course if you score goals and make incredible actions, it’s normal.
“Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been unbelievable; they share and deserve it. Another level. Now it’s narrow and everyone can win it.”
