Pep Guardiola is confident Sergio Aguero will get back to his best in time to help Manchester City at the most important period in the season.

The Club’s record goalscorer has featured in just nine games in a season disrupted by injury and COVID-19.

After returning from the knee injury suffered last season, Aguero missed five games with a hamstring problem, before his latest comeback was delayed after he came into contact with someone who had Coronavirus.

The striker has since tested positive himself, but his condition is improving and although Guardiola says it is too early to know when he will be ready to return, he believes City’s No.10 can make an important contribution in the closing months of the season.

“The first three or four days he struggled [after testing positive],” explained Guardiola ahead of City’s game against West Bromwich Albion.

“He felt so tired, but today he says he is feeling much better. Now is the time to test negative and then when he can, come back here and start to move and see how he feels day by day.

“I cannot tell you [when he will be back]. I don’t know how he will react [from COVID-19] in the first days when he starts training.

“I am so optimistic that he will give us, from February or March to the end of the season some good, good months.

“I am so optimistic, and it will help us in the decisive moments and give us the goals that we need.

“I am so confident it is going to happen.”

Two years ago, Vincent Kompany overcame injury troubles to make a seismic contribution to City’s 2018/19 title victory.

The legendary defender scored an iconic goal to secure a crucial win in our penultimate game against Leicester City, which put us in the driving seat over Liverpool heading into the final match of the season.

Whilst confident Aguero’s return will have a positive impact, Guardiola again stated the need to be patient with the Argentine, who he says will need time to get back to top form.

“Hopefully it will happen,” added the City boss when asked if his striker could replicate Kompany’s heroics.

“Vincent had a special quality where he could be out for two months, train once and play incredibly well.

“I don’t know whether Sergio has the quality to immediately go out and do it, because he needs the special sharpness to score a goal.

“But it depends on him. We will see on the training pitch and it is easy to realise when one player is fit or not.

“Hopefully he can help us with his special quality he has that makes him one of the best strikers ever - not just in England, in the whole time of football history.”
