Pep Guardiola says he expects the Premier League title race to be contested by five or maybe six teams this season.

The City boss has named the clubs he feels will push his side all the way to the finish line this campaign.

With the top five teams in the top flight separated by just three points, it is shaping up to be a fascinating battle to become the champions of England.

Guardiola even believes sides outside the current top five could challenge strongly.

Asked whether he believed Liverpool are the biggest threat of all, Pep said: “Absolutely. I think Arsenal will be too. They are so solid. Spurs, even the two defeats they have had recently, I think they will be there.

“Chelsea have one game a week, so four or five contenders are there.

“Newcastle will maybe join. Manchester United will maybe join. Many things can happen…”

Guardiola was also asked if Liverpool’s previous sprints to the finish line with City gave them any advantage should the title race follow a similar pattern as previous years.

“What I learned when I arrived here, the Premier League never ends,” he said.

“You think it’s over with 10 games to play, but you can’t relax because you could be relegated with so many points (remaining).

“It’s so long. Many things are going to happen. Ask me the question in March or April. Many things can happen - exceptional things.

“Liverpool last season had a lot of problems in terms of injury. They have no Champions League this season.

“Liverpool have always been there. Maybe they have the ability to do it.

“Liverpool will be contenders 100%. Both teams in last seven, eight years have been there.

“We have to win it on the field and with our people who will perform.”

The City boss also said he had no issue with his players playing for their country during the international break - whether competitive matches or otherwise.

Erling Haaland picked up a knock as Norway beat Faroe Islands last week, but Pep says these things can happen anywhere at any time.

“It’s football,” he said.

“(I have) no problems with them in the international teams. Not a problem. No. They don’t want to get injured. We are not an exception.”

And on the possibility of Haaland reaching the 50-goal Premier League milestone should he play on Saturday, Pep added: “I didn’t know. I don’t follow the stats and the records.

“I focus on Liverpool and winning the game.

“It’s good for him and us, but I’m not preparing the game for Erling to break the record and score goals.”
