Phil Foden believes Erling Haaland's lightning quick start to life as a Manchester City player hasn't altered the way Pep Guardiola's side play football.

The Norwegian striker has fired 22 goals in 16 appearances since joining the Club this summer, including Premier League hat-tricks against Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United.

While Haaland physically resembles a more old fashioned No.9, he has quickly adapted to the passing style of football that Guardiola is famous for.

The 22-year-old has struck up a particularly strong connection with Foden, who sees him as a player naturally suited to attacking, possession-based football.

The pair are City’s two leading scorers in the Premier League, with Haaland on 17 and Foden on six, and will be looking to add to their tally when we face Leicester City at 12:30 BST on Saturday.

“I don’t think he has changed our style of play too much,” said Foden.

“He is obviously more of a target man compared to previous years when we played with a false nine.

“But now we can look for him more, knowing he can bully defenders and run in behind. It hasn’t changed a lot, but it has changed a little bit. He is important for the way we play now.

“He gives us something different to what we are used to in previous years. All we have to do is keep finding him and he has got great players around him that can find him in the penalty area where he is strong.”

The England international was one of six City players shortlisted for the 2022 Ballon D’Or. He came joint 22nd with team-mate Bernardo Silva, while Kevin De Bruyne was City’s leading man with a third placed finish.

Having now been nominated for each of the last two awards, Foden is keen to maintain the high standards he has set for himself in his fledgling career.

He said: “I am obviously happy with where I came in the list. I have just got to keep up with my consistency to keep getting in the top 30 players and that is my aim.”
