Phil Foden has sent a worrying message out to the rest of the Premier League as he thrives in a more central role for City.

The England star has enjoyed a superb start to the season, occupying a more central berth in the absence of the injured Kevin De Bruyne.

Looking at his energetic, creative best, Foden admits he’s relishing playing in a position where he is constantly in demand.

“Obviously Kev is out, and he is a big miss for us with the creativity that he brings to the team,” said Foden.

“Julian and I have been playing more in the central role now. It is a position I really look forward to playing and I think it brings the best out of me.

“I prefer in the middle. I feel like I am always involved in the game and that is where I want to be.

“That is where I enjoy playing. I think being in the middle is a lot more challenging. There are always bodies around you, and you have always got to see people coming from behind and always checking your shoulder.

“I have done that from my youth days here at City and always played in that position, so it is something I am used to. The more games I play in there, I will just keep getting better.

“I don’t mind the pressure. Once I go onto the pitch I just don’t think about anything on the outside. I am just focused on my game and what I need to do.”

Foden is hoping to play his part in City maintaining a 100% start to the season against Fulham on Saturday.

The Blues are the only side with maximum points so far, and Foden believes continuing that run into the international break is crucial – though he is expecting nothing less than a difficult 90 minutes against the Cottagers.

“It has been perfect so far, getting three wins,” he reflected.

“You can see how challenging the league is because no other team has done it. I am really delighted with the start, and I know there is still another step to go for our team.

“I think physically we need to get a little bit better and that will come with the more games we play.

“It has been a great start and we want to keep that up, but we have never really won comfortably against Fulham.

“I saw the game they had against Arsenal and the problems that they caused. It is something we need to look out for because they are a very good team.

“They are well set up, so it is going to be a challenging game.”
