The England international’s stunning strike pulled the visitors level at the Santiago Bernabeu after deflected efforts from Eduardo Camavinga and Rodrygo had seen us fall behind.
Bernardo Silva’s early goal had been cancelled out in a bizarre two-minute spell early on, but City weathered the storm to ultimately come away with what could be a precious stalemate ahead of next week’s Etihad second leg.
And for Foden, the manner in which Pep Guardiola’s men responded to that early Madrid setback was a source of real pride.
“I don’t think it changed the game plan but I believe that sometimes you can score too early,” the midfielder reflected on City’s opener.
“They responded really well and we had to just settle again and play our football.
“This team’s come a long way now. When we go down we don’t put our heads down and believe in our ability.
“We know we can always come back from behind. It’s a great team to be a part of.”
City got our noses in front once again soon after Foden’s goal when Josko Gvardiol grabbed his first goal for the Club, but a vicious Federico Valverde volley meant it was honours even in the Spanish capital.
Our number 47 believes we’d done enough to come away from the Bernabeu with a win ahead of next week’s Etihad showdown, especially after a strong second half showing.
However, he insisted that it wasn’t a result that City should be disappointed with.
“With the possession we had they got a bit more tired, there was more space for me to come inside and find the pockets,” Foden explained.
“As the time went on the game seemed to open up a little bit more and I thought we grew into the game more, especially in the second half.
“We had a couple of chances and I’m just happy to make the most of one of mine.
“We can’t dwell on the result, it’s a fantastic result to come here and get a draw.”
