Pep Guardiola has made four changes to his Manchester City side for tonight’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid.

The City boss has selected the same starting line-up that secured a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu eight days ago.

John Stones, Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish are recalled to the side after they were on the bench for the 3-0 victory over Everton.

Aymeric Laporte, Julian Alvarez, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez are on the bench for tonight’s clash at the Etihad Stadium.

TEAMS

CITY XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Dias, Akanji, Rodrigo, Gundogan (C), De Bruyne, Bernardo, Grealish, Haaland.

Subs: Ortega Moreno, Carson, Phillips, Laporte, Alvarez, Gomez, Mahrez, Foden, Palmer, Lewis.

REAL MADRID XI: Courtois, Carvajal, Militao, Alaba, Camavinga, Valverde, Kroos, Modric, Vinicius, Rodrygo, Benzema (C).

Subs: Lunin, Vallejo, Nacho, Hazard, Asensio, Odriozola, Vazquez, Tchouameni, Ceballos, Rudiger, Mendy, Mariano.

TACTICS

Nathan Ake was the only player unavailable to Guardiola and Manuel Akanji is set to continue at left-back where he also played at Santiago Bernabeu.

On the other side, Kyle Walker is set to reprise his battle with Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior with John Stones and Ruben Dias in the centre of defence.

Stones is again likely to push into midfield alongside Rodrigo  in the anchor role as we look to control possession after having more of the ball in the first leg.

In that game, Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan, who has four goals in his last two Premier League matches, were the creative forces in midfield.

The front-three looks likely to again be Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish either side of central striker Erling Haaland.

Real’s only change from the first leg is to bring back centre-back Eder Militao, who was suspended for the first leg, in place of Antonio Rudiger.

FOCUS IS REAL

A win for either side will secure a place in the Champions League final against Inter Milan in Istanbul next month.

We moved to within three points of the Premier League title at the weekend with our victory over Everton and have three matches to reach an insurmountable total.

But Guardiola’s focus has always been on the upcoming game whatever the competition as we challenge for silverware on three fronts, with a place in the FA Cup final against Manchester United also secured.

It’s been a busy and demanding schedule as we chased down the Gunners in the league and overcame German sides RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich on the way to the semi-finals.

Winning is one of the best ways to overcome fatigue, according to the boss, and we go into tonight’s match having won 18 of our last 22 games in all competitions.

MATCH STATS

City have only lost one and won three of our last five meetings with Real Madrid in the Champions League under Pep Guardiola.

Real Madrid are winless in their previous four games at the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League – losing the last two.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have won their last two away games against English sides - Liverpool and Chelsea - both in the knockout stages.

Only one team has ever won three consecutive away trips to English sides in the knockout stages of the competition, with Barcelona doing so between 2013-14 and 2015-16.

City are unbeaten in our last 25 home games in the Champions League, winning 23, with Lyon in September 2018 being the last away side to win at the Etihad.
