Opposing manager - Xabi Alonso

After the conclusion of a very successful playing career, Alonso coached Real Madrid’s U14 team before being appointed as manager of Real Sociedad B in 2019, where he won promotion to the Segunda Division in his second season.

Alonso was named head coach of Bayer Leverkusen in 2022 and completed an unbeaten domestic double in 2024, winning the club’s first ever Bundesliga title and first DFB Pokal since 1993.

After two-and-a-half years with the German side, Alonso was appointed as the new head coach of his former club Real Madrid in June 2025.  His domestic campaign got off to the best possible start, earning the La Liga Manager of the Month award for August 2025.

Pep Guardiola preview

“Last season we arrive with all the problems but all the other games have been tight and good games.

“We have important players that have their first time here in Bernabeu.

“The biggest players that make a legacy for a decade - De Bruyne, Walker, Gundogan, Stones - are not here. Many are new, they want to experience that.

“They want to know they have done it and can do it again. It’s a good place to prove yourself and how you are as a team.”

Danger men

It’s no surprise to see Kylian Mbappe on this list as Real Madrid kicked off December with a dominant 3–0 win over Athletic Club. The game saw the France international play a crucial part as he bagged a brace and an assist.

In the Champions League he also leads Los Blancos’ scoring with nine goals accrued so far. His instinct and pace will mean our back-line will have to be on top form to stop him from making an impact.

Jude Bellingham is the midfield engine and gives Real Madrid a threat from deeper positions. The English youngster has shown great talent on the international stage and this has certainly translated to club level too. His presence helps to piece defence and attack together with his ability to break lines also deadly.

Vinicius Junior brings pace and unpredictability and when on form can compliment Mbappe by bringing a new dimension to play. By hugging the touchline and stretching the defensive line he helps to create space for his teammates. He also offers a level of versatility and by combining with Mbappe and Bellingham the trio can prove a real danger on the counter attack.

Previous meeting

The two sides last faced each other in February this year as we came head to head in the Champions League.

The hosts came away with the victory as we suffered a 3-1 loss at the Bernabeu, with Nico Gonzalez scoring our only goal of the game in stoppage time.

Last time out

Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol and Phil Foden were on the scorersheet as City beat high-flying Sunderland 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Dias’ spectacular hit from 25 yards broke the deadlock in the first half before Gvardiol nodded home a second just a few minutes later.

Foden’s fifth goal in a week made the points safe just after the hour mark, nodding in a magnificent Rayan Cherki cross.

The result marked our seventh successive Premier League home win and moves us within two points of leaders Arsenal after 15 games.
