The versatile Manchester-born youngster has signed a new contract at City, extending his stay at the Etihad until the summer of 2030.
Despite being just 20 years old, Lewis has already spent more than a decade at the Club having first joined our Academy at the age of eight.
He progressed seamlessly through the youth ranks first as a midfielder and later at full-back before stepping into Pep Guardiola’s senior squad in the summer of 2022 while still only 17.
Since then, he’s been a key part of the manager’s plans whether in defence or further upfield.
Speaking after putting pen to paper on his new deal, Lewis outlined where he thinks he’s best.
He said: “For me, I like playing in midfield. I think it’s easier than changing from full-back to midfield, or midfield to full-back in terms of running. It’s a bit long.
“I like playing in midfield, I like being part of the game more often but I’m happy to play wherever as long as I can help and contribute to the team.”
While it’s been a mixed start to the new season for City, Lewis has featured in all three games.
His standout moment came in creating our very first goal of the campaign, hitting a low cross for Erling Haaland to tap in.
It’s an area of his game that Lewis is keen to build on.
“I always say, when you grow up that’s what you want to be doing, scoring and assisting and not everyone can do that,” he said.
“It’s important. I want to develop both sides of the game because it’s important now that you can’t just be one sided, you’ve got to be able to do both.
“I think it’s something I want to improve on this season as well.”
Lewis achieved a childhood dream back in April, scoring City’s opener in the FA Cup semi-final win over Nottingham Forest at Wembley.
Driving from midfield in just the second minute, he hit an unstoppable low shot across the goalkeeper and inside the far post.
Having had a taste of it with five strikes so far, Lewis is hungry to add more goals to his game.
“Even today it doesn’t feel like a real moment,” he said.
“I think the whole day was special, being able to start in the semi-final and scoring so early was amazing and something I won’t forget for the rest of my life.”
“If I can get in those positions more often and work on that kind of finishing and feeling more natural in those positions then it’ll only get better.
“It’s something that’s really special and I enjoy doing it.”
Now 97 games into his senior career, Lewis could become only the third City player in the Premier League era to hit 100 appearances for the club before their 21st birthday after Phil Foden and Micah Richards.
When you consider he’s won seven major trophies in that time and earned five senior England caps, Lewis has packed a lot into his short career to date.
Reflecting on growing up just a few miles from the Etihad and dreaming of playing for City, Lewis can’t believe how far he’s come.
“Even before that when you’re coming through the Academy you don’t always see it as a possibility to achieve and get through into the first team” he began.
“Especially when I was coming through, the level was so high.
“They were always winning, you’d look at the players in the squad and you’d think it’s impossible to even think about getting to that level.
“To be here today at almost 100 games it’s an amazing achievement for myself and it’s a credit to my family.”
