The Argentine striker revealed his memories of the night City beat Napoli 4-2 in 2017 during the full match screening of the game on Wednesday evening on City+ where he provided guest commentary.
“I knew that by scoring one goal I would become the Club’s all-time goal-scorer,” said Aguero.
“The atmosphere was great, Napoli supporters were pushing really hard and it was beautiful, but at the same time I knew that the game was going to be tough. Obviously, I didn’t know I was going to score, but I tried until I got it.
“I played in Napoli once before in my first or second season with Roberto Mancini at charge. I remember I started on the bench, but I played few minutes.
“Napoli had a really good team, and with Maurizio Sarri in charge they progressed a lot. They were pressing high, his style of playing has some similarities to ours.
“They played not like us, but quite similar.. They were pressing high and we were struggling on our built-up.
“At the first half we needed time to find our pace, but at the second one we played well. We had adapted well to the pitch and we imposed our rhythm.
“Both Stones and Otamendi scored great headers and when the centre backs are doing well and are full of self-confidence that makes us feel safe.”
In a pulsating match that ebbed and flowed, the scores was 2-2 with 69 minutes played when Sergio finally surpassed Eric Brook’s 79-year record of 177 goals and he recalled the moment he realised he’d etched his name in Club history forever.
“Napoli came close to scoring a third but Ederson saved it and then we scored on the counterattack,” he said.
“When Leroy got the ball I thought ‘ciao!’, but then he fell down, and the ball just came to me… and that was beautiful! I had very clear idea that I wanted to put the ball in the bottom corner, just inside the post.
“The goal was beautiful; I just had broken the record. That was a fantastic night.
“Destiny wanted me to score it. If you watch it again, Leroy falls down and the ball could have gone to Kevin or anywhere else, but it came to me.
“I was happy because of the goal and it was a nice one too!
“Raheem scored again in added time and we won the game 4-2 – it is a great memory and I night I will never forget.”
And Sergio added that his commentary skills might come in handy after his playing days are over, saying, “I can work at City after football, can’t I? At CityTV, as a commentator!”
