Sergio Gomez can't wait to come up against former manager Vincent Kompany in Friday's Premier League opener.

City travel to Turf Moor for our first league assignment of the new campaign as we set our sights on a record-breaking fourth successive title.

It means a second meeting with Vincent Kompany since the Club legend left after leading us to the title in 2019.

Kompany won 12 major honours with City and is now permanently remembered with a statue outside the Etihad Stadium.

However, his connection with Gomez came after swapping Manchester for Anderlecht.

While managing his hometown club, Kompany oversaw the development of the talented Spaniard who went on to be named the club’s Player of the Season in 2021/22.

We welcomed Kompany and Burnley to the Etihad in March for an FA Cup quarter-final and now Gomez is looking forward to seeing his old boss again.

“For me the match against Burnley is going to be a nice game because I spent a year with Vincent in which he helped me grow a lot as a player,” he said.

“It will be a pleasure to play against him.

“He had a great season last year and Burnley deserves to be in the Premier League so we know it will be a tough challenge.”

Gomez was part of the squad for last season’s historic Treble success at City, playing 23 times across all competitions.

The 22-year-old also enjoyed a sparkling summer, scoring a joint-record three times as Spain reached the final of the U21 European Championship.

Gomez has now revealed Kompany has kept an eye on his progress since they went separate ways away from Anderlecht.

“I talked to him during the holidays - while I was at the Euros,” he stated.

“He congratulated me on the results of the tournament and on all the titles we had won. I will talk to him for sure and it’ll be good to see him before we start a new Premier League season.”
