Team news
Juanma Lillo has made two changes to the City side for this afternoon’s Premier League meeting with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
Bernardo Silva, returning after illness kept him out of the Newcastle game, replaces Phil Foden, who drops to the bench.
Nathan Ake, who was among the substitutes against the Magpies, comes in against the Blades in place of Manuel Akanji, who’s not fully fit.
City are aiming for three wins in a row to start the Premier League campaign, which would be the first time we’ve done that since the first season under Pep Guardiola in 2016/17, when we defeated Sunderland, Stoke City and West Ham.
Sheffield United have made one change to their starting line-up from last Friday’s Nottingham Forest game – George Baldock coming in for Max Lowe.
The Blades are aiming to avoid beginning a season with three straight league defeats for what would be only the fourth time in their history.
TEAMS
SHEFF UTD XI: Foderingham, Baldock, Robinson, Egan, Ahmedhodzic, Osborn, Hamer, Norwood, Souza, Osula, Traore
Subs: Davies, Trusty, Basham, McBurnie, Coulibaly, Bogle, Larouci, Marsh, Brooks
CITY XI: Ederson, Walker (C), Dias, Ake, Gvardiol, Rodrigo, Kovacic, Bernardo, Grealish, Alvarez, Haaland
Subs: Ortega Moreno, Phillips, Doku, Gomez, Foden, Bobb, Palmer, Lewis, McAtee
PEP GUARDIOLA PREVIEW
With Pep Guardiola currently recuperating in Spain after a routine back surgery, his No.2 Juanma Lillo took to the manager’s seat to address the media ahead of our trip to Bramall Lane.
In the press conference, Lillo was asked about how involved Guardiola will be on Sunday. “Of course!”, exclaimed Lillo. “Pep is always there! The contact is continuous. Telephone, video call, everything.
“He is watching Sheffield United right now. What’s important is his health. That’s what matters. That doesn’t keep him from being who he is. He’s fully focused on the team and the match.”
Lillo also provided an injury update on Bernardo Silva, following his contract extension, which means he is in contention to feature on Sunday.
“Perhaps it’s a question more for the doctor but he has trained fully normal. I don’t think he’s ill at all and is good to go,” said Lillo.
PREVIOUS MEETING
The last time we faced Sheffield United was in last season’s FA Cup semi-finals.
A 3-0 victory over the Blades, courtesy of a Riyad Mahrez hat-trick, booked our place in June’s Wembley showpiece against Manchester United - a match we would also go on to win 2-1.
The Algerian winger scored from the penalty spot before two sensational strikes in the space of five minutes saw us progress.
LAST TIME OUT
Our last match saw us edge out Newcastle United in our first home match of the 2023/24 campaign.
In a tight contest, it was City who found a way to victory with Julian Alvarez’s sublime strike beat Nick Pope on the half hour.
It proved to be the only goal of the match, as we walked away with two wins out of two to start the new season.
