It’s former Club captain Vincent Kompany’s 37th birthday today.

The Belgian was our leader between 2011 and 2019, lifting four Premier League titles, four League Cups and an FA Cup as skipper.

A further FA Cup success also came before he took the armband.

A physical defender and inspirational leader, his contribution to City is now permanently recognised with a statue outside the Etihad Stadium.

Kompany is currently managing Championship leaders Burnley, who secured promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking on Friday evening.

His side were visitors in the FA Cup recently, with the Belgian receiving a standing ovation from all four sides of the ground as he emerged from the tunnel.

Here we’ll take a look at some of the best performances on his way to being one of the best players in the Club’s history…

City 1-0 Chelsea, September 2010

After arriving from Hamburg, Kompany was initially deployed in central midfield. It didn’t take too long for the then-No.33 to move back into defence.

With the arrival of the 2010/11 season, Roberto Mancini’s team were looking to lift the first trophy in the Club’s new era and this was a result against the defending champions that kickstarted that belief.

Kompany kept a potent Chelsea attack including Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda at bay throughout the game.

City 1-0 Manchester United, April 2012

With the title race down to the last few weeks, City knew we needed to beat our city rivals to have the destiny of the trophy in our hands.

A cagey affair between two sides who clearly understood the significance of the evening followed.

However, Kompany provided the decisive moment when he leapt high above a box full of defenders to power a header beyond David De Gea. He wheeled away to celebrate with a jubilant Etihad Stadium.

City 2-0 West Ham, May 2014

The 2013/14 title race went down to the final day – City aren’t used to doing things the easy way.

We knew three points on the day would be enough but the goal wouldn’t come in the early period of the game. Eventually, Samir Nasri’s strike broke the deadlock and we were 1-0 up at half-time.

Kompany, always the man for the big occasion, added the second just after the break when he pounced on a loose ball in the box. It would only be around an hour from that moment until he got his hands on the famous trophy.

City 3-0 Arsenal, February 2018

City had a particular affinity to the League Cup while Kompany was at the Club. He won it four times during his time at the Etihad, with this final win perhaps the most dominant.

It came during the unforgettable Centurions campaign in which Pep Guardiola’s team became the best the Premier League has ever seen.

Kompany contributed at the top end of the pitch in this one, scoring the second as we dominated Arsene Wenger’s team from the first minute to last.

City 1-0 Leicester City, May 2019

With Liverpool breathing down our necks right up until the final minutes of the season, City had to win 14 games in a row to seal the title.

The penultimate assignment was a meeting with Champions League chasing Leicester at the Etihad, who were proving stubborn opposition.

Having struggled to find a route to goal and with time running out, Kompany elected to hit a shot from all of 30 yards. It flew into the top corner, much to the surprise of Sergio Aguero who could be heard on the microphones shouting “Vinny, no!” as the Belgian shaped up.

The goal ensured the title race remained in our hands heading into the final weekend of the season.
