Team news

Erling Haaland is handed his Premier League debut as City make two changes from the side that began the Community Shield for our league opener at West Ham.

Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden come into the starting line up with Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez reverting to the bench from the side that lost out to Liverpool in last weekend’s traditional curtain raiser.

Summer signing Haaland meanwhile will make his long-awaited City league bow as Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions seek to get our title defence off to a winning start at the London Stadium.

Fellow close season signings Stefan Ortega Moreno, Kalvin Phillips and Julian Alvarez are all amongst the substitutes.

Also named on the bench is youngster Rico Lewis who impressed on our summer tour to the USA.

Pre-match press conference

Pep Guardiola spoke to the media on Friday morning.

On having just 20 players in his first team squad, he said: “I like to work with not many players and have everyone involved.

“It is what it is. We have shown in the last years we have a small squad and we are there in the last stages. We have a transfer window in winter where we can take something we cannot do now.”

On the Club’s potential upcoming transfer activity, he said: “Nothing special. We are the same.

“Josh is there. Joao is there. Nathan is there. We will see. We have two weeks until the end of the month and we will see.

“There are a lot of players around the world and a lot of them can suit perfectly this team and the way we are.

“The transfer market is often difficult. Selling is harder than buying but sometimes it is not possible. We have an academy and we will see.”

Previous meeting

We drew 2-2 when we travelled to the London Stadium for the penultimate game of last season.

Guardiola’s men fought back from two goals down to rescue a point which kept our fortunes in our own hands in the Premier League title race.

Jarrod Bowen’s well-taken double had put West Ham in a commanding position at half-time, but Jack Grealish pulled one back before four minutes after the restart before Vladmir Coufal headed Riyad Mahrez‘s free-kick into his own net to restore parity.

Mahrez had a chance to win the game with five minutes remaining, only to see his penalty saved by Lukasz Fabianski after Craig Dawson fouled Gabriel Jesus.

Last time out

City fell to a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool as Julian Alvarez scored on his debut in an action-packed Community Shield encounter.

Alvarez poked home from close range to level the scores in the 70th minute after Trent Alexander-Arnold had curled Liverpool in front from 20-yards via a slight deflection off the head of Nathan Ake.

Mohamed Salah restored the Reds’ lead from the penalty spot with seven minutes remaining after Ruben Dias was penalised for handball and Darwin Nunez wrapped up the victory with a stooping header from close range in the fourth minute of added time.

West Ham drew 0-0 with Ligue 1 outfit Lens in their final pre-season friendly.

Form guide

City come into the game having won both of our respective pre-season fixtures against Club America and Bayern Munich before last Saturday’s Community Shield defeat to Liverpool.

David Moyes’ side won two and drew four of their summer friendlies, suffering one defeat against Scottish giants, Rangers.

We have won 12 of our last 15 meetings with the Hammers, with our only defeat coming via a penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw in last season’s Carabao Cup fourth round.
