Just our third loss of the WSL campaign, City’s pursuit of the title remains in our hands despite a 3-2 reverse against the Seagulls.
City stormed into the lead after just five minutes when Kerolin sent a looping effort beyond Chiamaka Nnadozie, although the first half was not to end as kindly.
Brighton got themselves back level in added time through Madison Haley, with the forward adding another to her tally after Kiko Seike’s early second half strike to turn the game on its head.
Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw halved the deficit late on with a clinical finish across goal but City couldn’t quite mount what would’ve been a remarkable comeback.
For our captain, this sort of occasional blip is part and parcel of top level football, and she’s confident we’ll see an immediate response.
She said: “This is football, and this is a test for us because football is about character, who we are and what we’re made of.
“We’ve worked hard all season for moments like this, and it will test us this week, but I have no doubt that this team will step up, and I don’t say that in an arrogant way, but with confidence.
“The positive side of things is that it’s still in our hands, and while that is the case, I’m super positive, but today, of course, I’m disappointed. Not angry, just frustrated.
“But, we’ll review the game, look at the positives and areas we can improve, and best believe that by tomorrow I’ll be looking forward to next Sunday at the Joie Stadium in front of a sell-out crowd.”
We now have just two games left to play in the WSL this season, with our next one coming at home in front of a sell-out crowd against Liverpool.
That is the focus for Greenwood and her team-mates, and our skipper says we’ll learn from both the positive and negative parts of our Brighton clash heading into that tie.
“Conceding two goals either side of half time is a really difficult time to concede, and that is something we need to look at,” our skipper added.
“I thought we played really well in the first half and created some really good chances, and should’ve been further ahead, but that’s football.
“You can’t knock the fight in this team because that is never in doubt with us.”
