Janine Beckie says Canada can take pride in their Arnold Clark Cup performance, despite a 1-0 defeat to Spain in their final game denying them a tournament victory.

Three points would have seen the Olympic champions lift the trophy at Molineux, but a goal from Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas sealed the win for Spain, who finished second behind England after their win against Germany.

Putellas won the contest in the 21st minute, arriving unmarked in the box and steering home Leila Ouahabi’s low cross from 10-yards to finish off a slick passing move she had instigated.

It meant Canada had to settle for a third place finish, with four points from their three games, but Beckie says they can take plenty of positives from their performances against three of Europe’s best sides.

“They are a fantastic team,” she said of Spain. “Definitely a favourite for the Euros as well as England.

“We faced three very good teams in the tournament. Half our team is out of season. There are players who have played a lot of minutes today that haven’t played a game in months, so we have to take the positive from that.

“[There were] definitely some chances that should have been put in the back of the net and we have to do better defensively to not give away a goal like we did, but a there are a lot of positives to take a away.

“Considering the opposition, we have a lot to be proud of.”

Beckie started on the right of a front three in the West Midlands and tested Spanish goalkeeper Lola Gallardo with a 30-yard free-kick before Putellas struck.

The Manchester City winger came close to creating an equaliser before the break when she picked out Jordyn Huitema with a teasing delivery from a free-kick, but Gallardo showed brilliant reactions to tip the striker’s header onto the bar from point-blank range.

Spain finished the first half the stronger and Putellas hit the bar with a header after the break, but Canada grew into the game and put the opposition under pressure as they searched for an equaliser.

Beckie was withdrawn 14-minutes from time and her replacement, Cloe Lacasse, forced a good save from Gallardo, whilst a deflection off Quinn meant Nichelle Prince headed a golden opportunity over the bar from six-yards in the closing stages.
