Caroline Weir says City must use Sunday’s 4-1 win over Leicester as a springboard to build momentum.

The Scotland international, who earned her 100th City appearance on Thursday night against Durham, was on the scoresheet, as Gareth Taylor’s side produced a clinical display at the King Power Stadium to earn a crucial three points in the FA Women’s Super League.

Despite falling behind inside the first minute, the visitors responded superbly to fight back and storm to a comprehensive win – and Weir admits the result was needed, following a difficult run of form.

“We’re happy,” she reflected. “We needed that performance.

“It was positive. Although we didn’t start so well, giving the goal away, we came back well and dominated throughout, creating a lot of good chances – and we came out on top with four goals.

“It says a lot about our character. Even when the Leicester goal went in, we knew not to dwell on it.

“There was so much time left and from then on, we dominated, especially in their half. It’s just about putting those chances away.

“There were a lot of chances for everyone. Playing with Lauren Hemp on the left side, there are always going to be  lot of opportunities in the box and one fell to me and I managed to put it away.

“We scored a lot of goals – we were more clinical this weekend, which definitely helps and hopefully, we’ll build on that.

“We were always confident and today, we showed it.”

City’s next game sees Taylor’s side host League Champions Chelsea at the Academy Stadium on Sunday 14 November (15:00).

With Emma Hayes’ outfit having triumphed in the Women’s FA Cup fixture last weekend, Weir says she and the team are relishing the chance to face the Londoners again on the back of the Leicester triumph.

“It’s a huge result,” she added. “Obviously, the last few weeks have been a challenging time for us as a team but we’ve stuck together.

“Today was definitely what we needed – a good performance with four goals.

“It’s a performance to build on. Next week is a massive game and we’ll look forward to that. We go again.”
