Caroline Weir had a hand in both goals as Scotland beat Slovenia 2-0 in the Pinatar Cup.

The City midfielder played the full 90 minutes for Pedro Martinez Losa’s side, as they mounted the perfect response to Thursday’s 3-1 loss against Wales.

Defeat in their opening game means Weir & co. are battling for fifth place and will face one of Poland or Hungary on Tuesday 22 February in their next encounter.

And they’ll go into the tie full of confidence thanks to a dominant victory in Spain, in which Weir was at her creative best.

The City midfielder clipped a teasing ball through the Slovenian defence to Abi Harrison for the game’s opener, with the Bristol City forward confidently slotting home past the onrushing Dominika Rezekova.

And Weir’s quality shone through once again on 27 minutes when she threaded a ball down the line to former City teammate Claire Emslie, who squared for Martha Thomas from close-range.

City’s number 19 thought she’d added a third soon after when she tapped home before the break, but the offside flag cut her celebrations short.

And while Scotland weren’t able to add to their tally in the second half, Weir went close once again on the hour, seeing a shot blocked by a crowd of bodies after working the ball well onto her weaker right foot.

Weir and co. will face the winner of Poland v Hungary in their next match, which is set to kick-off at 14:30 (UK) on Tuesday 22 February.
