In our latest instalment of City at the World Cup, we take a look at Swedish international Filippa Angeldahl.

A total of 14 members of City’s squad have been included in either their country’s confirmed or provisional World Cup squads for the tournament being held in Australia and New Zealand.

Starting in less than two weeks, the countdown to the opening game has begun and as part of the build-up we are focusing on our players hoping to win the big prize.

This time we put the spotlight on one of City’s midfielders...

Angeldahl made her senior international debut as a 20-year-old in March 2018, but was not part of the World Cup squad in 2019 as Sweden finished third.

With 39 international caps and 11 goals, she is an important figure for her country, and scored twice at last summer’s European Championships as the Swedes reached the semi-finals.

PLAYER PROFILE

The 25-year-old joined City from Swedish champions BK Hacken in September 2021, eager to test herself in the FA Women’s Super League after spending her early career in her homeland.

Angeldahl did not have to wait long for her first goal, scoring in an FA Cup win over Leicester City, and she claimed her first piece of silverware in March 2022’s Continental Cup success against Chelsea.

But she has really come to the fore this season after adapting the physicality of the WSL, making 25 appearances in all competitions including 20 starts as she became a regular in the latter part of the season.

She thrived in an attacking midfield role, particularly in a three with Yui Hasegawa and Laura Coombs where her energy and tenacity off the ball fits perfectly.

Creative and with excellent close control, she finished the season with five goals and three assists including sensational strikes against Bristol City in the FA Cup and Chelsea in a WSL thriller.

Angeldahl believes she is playing some of the best football of her career and will hope to take that with her into the World Cup.

“I have been playing more now. So, of course, I get more confidence and can play more like me. It’s been really good,” she said.
