In less than a week the 2023 Women’s World Cup will have begun it’s search for the best team in the world.

City have 14 representatives at the upcoming prestigious tournament, stretching across seven nations, who have all arrived in Australia and New Zealand ahead of the opening game where the latter host Norway on Thursday 20 July in Auckland.

And in our final instalment of our player previews, we look at the Club’s newest signing…

Previous World Cup performances

As City fans eagerly await the start of the Women’s Super League and in tandem, Jill Roord’s debut in sky blue, her appearances at this summer’s World Cup will provide fruitful insight into what the midfielder can bring to Gareth Taylor’s squad.

Since making her debut for Holland in their match against Thailand in February 2015, Roord has been a mainstay name in the national team, totalling 89 caps for The Oranje.

Her first taste of tournament experience came when she was 18 years old after she was selected for the 2015 Women’s World Cup squad.

However, she wouldn’t get her first minutes in a major competition until the 2017 Women’s Euros in which she played a key role in Holland winning the tournament on home soil.

Holland carried their strong form into the 2019 Women’s World Cup with Roord scoring the winning goal in their opening group game against New Zealand as the result finished 1-0.

The Netherlands went on to reach the final, losing out to title holders USA 2-0.

Roord has continued to develop her game on the international stage, scoring 12 goals since then and is looking to add more to her tally over the summer.

Player Profile

Roord is City’s first signing ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, returning to the WSL after a two-year spell with Vfl Wolfsburg.

The 26-year-old made 69 appearances for the Bundesliga side, helping them in their second-place finish in the league last season as well as featuring in the Champions League final against Barcelona.

Prior to her move to Germany, Roord spent two years in the English topflight, representing Arsenal under Joe Montemurro’s tenure.

Roord’s CV boasted success from a young age. Before leaving her home nation, the playmaker claimed her first league title – aged just 16 – in her debut season with FC Twente.

She would go on to win three more titles and the Eredivisie Golden Boot in 2015/16 after a phenomenal 20-goal season before departing for a spell at Bayern Munich.

The attacking midfielder is excited by the challenge of the competitive-natured WSL and it comes as no surprise that she is looking to add more silverware to her cabinet for both club and country.
