GARETH TAYLOR PREVIEW
Taylor reveals encouraging news on Miedema progress
Gareth Taylor says Vivianne Miedema’s recent surgery was a ‘minor procedure’ to correct a small issue the Dutch star has been struggling with.
She last appeared in the 2-0 UEFA Women’s Champions League win over Barcelona at the Joie Stadium in early October.
The former Arsenal forward has enjoyed a successful start to life at City with two goals and one assist in her five appearances in all competitions as Taylor’s side went into the first international break unbeaten in all competitions.
Asked about Miedema’s progress, Taylor replied: “Only that it was a minor procedure. A little niggle we felt may have gone away, but after discussing with the surgeon decided to do a small operation.
“She’s been fabulous with young players and importance on pitch has been top, she’s added another dimension.
“Getting herself right with surgery, getting fit and strong we’ll have an advanced version. Look at Jill, away from the pitch, getting strong, and a better version.
“We’ve not put a timescale on it. It was some sort of keyhole surgery so I shouldn’t keep her out for a long time.
“Knowing Viv, I saw her and she says she feel s ready to run. It might be a bit early but that’s her. I feel we’ll get an improved version when she’s back.”
And there was encouraging news on defender Naomi Layzell who has also been absent since our victory over Barca last month.
Taylor revealed: “She’s getting there. The feeling after Barcelona was hopefully this won’t be too extensive. That’s still the case
“[There is some swelling that we need to take care of but she’s made a solid strong start to the season and getting her back will be very important because she can fill so many positions. “
The City boss added it is too soon to know if there are any fresh injury concerns after the recent international break.
City travel to Crystal Palace this Sunday to attempt to consolidate our pole position in the WSL against a side two points off the bottom of the table.
“It’s hard to give an answer,” he said.
“Players have just arrived and are due to train later. We’ll soon know who’s available
“[There are a] couple of illnesses flying around. When you put it into the context of travelling it can cause those issues. But we’re in pretty good shape.”
PREVIOUS MEETING
Sunday’s assignment represents our first competitive meeting with Crystal Palace who were promoted to the WSL last term.
LAST TIME OUT
Lauren Hemp spearheaded our comeback 2-1 win over Aston Villa last time out as we extended our unbeaten start to the season to nine straight matches in all competitions.
Having trailed at half-time at the Joie Stadium, the England international equalised with a sublime lob before she assisted Jill Roord’s first goal of the term which sealed three points.
