Demi Stokes believes she’ll continue to reach new heights at Manchester City thanks to the fresh demands the Club place on the full-back position.

A style mirrored across the Men’s, Women’s, Elite Development Squad and Academy sides, our full-backs often move into a central position to provide more passing options in midfield areas when City have possession.

Known for her composure on the ball and ability in forward areas, it’s a subtle tweak that Stokes – fresh from signing a new deal until 2024 - is enjoying getting to grips with.

Indeed, despite already boasting a wealth of experience in the game, she believes being presented with new opportunities to hone her craft is the best way for her to continue growing as a player.

“Because we have a lot of the ball you can see now the style is also changing and developing,” she explained.

“I think as a player it’s good to have your strengths but it’s also good to add different tools to your toolbox.

“The full-back coming inside is probably something we do more now instead of the old style of overlapping. I think it’s the style that fits and I think I can do both.

“It’s just good at this stage of my career to keep learning and to keep pushing.”

Stokes has been a key figure for City throughout her time at the Club so far, but she concedes that the past 12 months haven’t been the easiest from a footballing perspective.

The defender was limited to nine appearances in all competitions across 2022/23 due to a combination of injuries and illness, meaning our number three’s leadership qualities were often felt away from the pitch.

Starting a family in late spring of 2022 also, of course, took time getting to grips with for the 31-year-old.

However, she sees this new deal as an opportunity to showcase her qualities on a regular basis once again for a Club she’s described as her home.

She said: “I think last year was probably one of the most difficult seasons I’ve ever had in terms of injury, illness and I think a big changing moment as well.

“So, I think it’s good to get that reset button, ready to go again and kick on.

“I think obviously that this summer I’ve got a good chunk of time where I can work on myself, work on my weaknesses and strengths and push on.”
