Seven City players featured for England as the Lionesses drew their second Arnold Clark Cup match 0-0 with Spain.

Lucy Bronze, Alex Greenwood, Jill Scott – making her 155th international appearance - Georgia Stanway and Ellen White were among the starting XI, while Lauren Hemp and Keira Walsh were brought on in the second 45 at Carrow Road.

Against a Spain side looking to dominate possession, chances were few and far between in the early stages of the match, with Aitana Bonmati going closest with a long-range lob after a defensive mix-up between England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton and Jess Carter.

In need of some inspiration, Sarina Wiegman introduced Lauren Hemp to the fray at half-time.

And the City winger almost made an instant impact inside 30 seconds, striking the foot of the Spain post after shifting the play onto her left foot.

That chance saw England enjoy a spell of relative dominance, with the visitors thankful to Maria Leon for a crucial last-ditch challenge on White as the forward raced in on goal.

But it was La Roja’s turn to rue a gilt-edged chance next, with Lucia Garcia slicing an effort wide of the target from ten yards after England had failed to clear a left-wing cross.

A topsy-turvy encounter swung back in the Lionesses’ favour with Hemp once again heavily involved.

The City winger picked the pocket of Ivana Andres before threading the ball through to White, but England’s record scorer took a heavy touch and couldn’t get a shot off before the defence recovered.

With five minutes still to play, Walsh and Bronze combined down the right with the ball eventually falling Ella Toone, but the former City midfielder couldn’t make a clean enough contact to trouble Misa Rodriguez in the Spain goal.

Neither side could find a break through in a lively encounter, and the stalemate means England sit second, level on points with Spain after both sides drew their opening two matches.

Janine Beckie‘s Canada now sit top of the Arnold Clark Cup rankings having edged out Germany 1-0 in the later kick-off.

Following on from her spectacular equaliser against England in the tournament opener, the City winger grabbed an early assist when her deep corner was headed home by Vanessa Gilles.

The Germans dominated proceedings - with 68% possession and 17 attempts on goal compared to Canada’s three, but couldn’t find the all important breakthrough at Carrow Road.

It means that Beckie and co. are in the driving seat ahead of the final round of fixtures, which take place on Wednesday 23 February.

Canada face Spain at 14:30 (UK), while England lock horns with Germany from 19:30.

Elsewhere, Filippa Angeldahl‘s Sweden took a huge step towards the Algarve Cup final courtesy of a 4-0 win over host nation Portugal.

The midfielder played 80 minutes for the Olympic silver medallists as they ran riot in Almancil, with Hanna Glas, Amanda Ilestedt, former City forward Kosovare Asllani and Stina Blackstenius all on target.

Finally, Julie Blakstad was an unused substitute as Norway’s hopes of an Algarve Cup final spot were dashed by Italy.

Goals from Valentina Giacinti and Arianna Caruso handed the Italians a quickfire double before the half hour and although Celin Bizet Ildhusoy halved the deficit on half-time, Norway couldn’t mount a second-half comeback.

It means Blakstad and co. will face either Sweden or host nation Portugal in Tuesday’s third-place play-off.

City forward Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw was also on target for Jamaica as the Reggae Girlz made it two wins from two in CONCACAF Championship qualifying.

Shaw grabbed a brace in a 6-1 win over Grenada, finding the net on the stroke of half-time before rounding off the scoring late on.
