Esme Morgan says there is a special sense of anticipation as City prepare to launch our FA Women’s’ Super League campaign at home to Arsenal this Sunday.

On the back of England’s historic success at EURO 2022 earlier this summer, interest in the women’s game has never been higher.

City, along with a host of other WSL clubs, have reported a sharp spike in both season ticket and match ticket sales and tickets for this Sunday’s eye-catching league opener at home to Arsenal at the Academy Stadium are close to being sold out.

Looking ahead to what promises to be a mouth-watering first league encounter, Morgan says there is a real sense of excitement and anticipation in the City camp.

What’s more, the full-back believes the backing of a packed stadium will only help further inspire Gareth Taylor’s players as we seek to make a positive start to the new campaign

“I can’t wait. I think the atmosphere is going to be absolutely incredible,” Morgan declared.

“The club have capitalised on the success of the Euros in getting the tickets sold so quickly. It’s such an exciting prospect.

“The two of us have always been involved in title challenges over the last six, seven, eight years. It’s a really exciting game to kick the season off with and hopefully we can start on a good foot.

“When you’ve got the support of a full, loud crowd behind you it just gives you so much momentum and completely takes the wind out of any opposition enthusiasm that they have.

“You can really thrive off it. The biggest crowds I’ve played in front of, you feel the excitement and anticipation as you get towards the goal.

“It really pushes you on, the fans play a huge role and if we can consistently get sell-out crowds, it will be so important to us.”

Morgan meanwhile is also relishing being back in action after having spent almost a year on the sidelines recovering from a fractured leg.

After a patient rehabilitation process, the 21-year-old returned to competitive action last month in our UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifier against Real Madrid.

Though the result may have ended in a heart-breaking 1-0 loss for City, for Morgan simply being back doing what she does best was an occasion to savour.

“I loved being back and playing the 90 minutes,” Morgan reflected.

“Obviously, the result was absolutely gutting but just being back in a competitive match, tackling people and getting stuck in, I felt so good and really enjoyed it.

“I can’t say I felt too good the next day, I think the 90 minutes was a bit of a shock to the system!

“But I absolutely loved it and it felt so good to be back playing alongside everyone.”
