Having spent almost 12 months out of the game with a lower leg fracture, the 21-year-old made her long-awaited return to the fold in August.
And after impressing in the early stages of the campaign, Morgan was called up to Sarina Wiegman’s latest England squad for international friendlies against the United States and the Czech Republic.
A potential senior debut for the young defender would be just rewards for her tireless efforts on and off the pitch, but while Morgan’s focus is solely on furthering her football career, she also has an eye towards the future.
Indeed, the 21-year-old is currently pursuing a Sports Science degree at Manchester Metropolitan University, with her studies even proving beneficial during her spell on the side lines.
“It’s part-time and completely online, so it’s really flexible around my football,” she explained.
“I find it really interesting; I just like learning new things – I’m a bit of a geek but I’m proud of it!
“I’ve always been a person to ask why I’m doing something anyway, I bet the physios got sick to death of me [when I was injured].
“I had less time [to study] when I was injured because the rehab hours are a lot longer because you have so many little things to work on, so much to try and improve on and get better at.
“I actually fell behind in my studies once I got injured, but they were very helpful in giving me an extension so I could catch up.
“[But] it definitely gave me a better understanding of my injury and the healing process that was going on in my leg, such as the length of time it was going to take me to get back to normal.”
It’s a recurring theme for Morgan, who made her professional debut for City within days of receiving her GCSE results.
Nonetheless, she has always welcomed the opportunity to shoulder a number of different responsibilities, despite her tender years.
She joked: “I have always been a bit of a geek, so I quite liked doing my studying and I would come home after training, and I would be revising.
“At that time, I would have been in the Academy, so when my Dad would drive me over for training I would have my flash cards and stuff, doing my revision on the way.
“I have always liked learning stuff, so I found it quite easy really, which is quite unusual to be honest.”
You can cheer on Esme Morgan and her City team-mates at the Etihad Stadium when we host Manchester United in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
The fixture, which is set to take place on Sunday 11 December at 12:30 (UK), will be the third time our women’s first team have played at the Etihad.
City hosted Everton there back in May 2014, before welcoming our local rivals in September 2019, when Caroline Weir’s wonder strike saw us run out 1-0 winners in front of what was then a WSL record crowd, and what remains a club record of 31,213 fans.
With almost 25,000 tickets already sold, it promises to be another historic occasion.
