Gareth Taylor has highlighted the importance of sticking to our identity in City’s excellent recent form.

City welcome Chelsea to the Joie Stadium on Thursday evening with a place in the Continental Cup final up for grabs at the end of March.

The two sides are neck and neck at the top of the Barclays Women’s Super League table, with Taylor’s side looking to extend our winning run to 13 matches in all competitions.

It’s a phenomenal run of results but the boss, who signed a three-year contract extension earlier this week, insists it’s the product of an ongoing process to perfect our free-flowing playing style.

For Taylor, watching that hard work off the pitch come to fruition on it remains a real source of personal pride for him and his coaching team.

He said: “I am very fortunate that I had an amazing education [at Manchester City], with Scott Sellars and Rodolfo Borrell.

“I remember Rodolfo saying that when you finalise your true blueprint, your football world completely changes.

“I have always said performances are more important than the result. I am very passionate about our style, the second goal we scored against Everton - there are 25 passes before that. As a coach, they are your best moments.

“Sometimes we need to be direct, of course. We aren’t doing this to take risks.

“There are risks in the way we play but we know the rewards are high, it’s part of our process. We are seeing really good things now.”

The boss is also confident that City can step up to the occasion on Thursday evening, with a place in the Continental Cup final within touching distance.

While Taylor is under no illusions of the challenge his team have ahead of us, he’s called for his players to seize the opportunity in front of them.

“That’s where we do our best stuff,” he said of City’s approach to big games.

“I like the mentality of this group. Not just this season, I have seen it in the past.

“We played Arsenal back-to-back last season, lost in extra-time on a Wednesday and then played them in the WSL here - my team talk was minimal because I could see in their eyes.

“You could say the same about Chelsea - we turned them over at their place and now they have a chance.

“We know it will be difficult, there will be moments when we have to suffer.

“The run we are on - 12 straight wins - is incredible but the next game is always the most important.

“It’s the business end of the season now so it’s about taking opportunities.”
