The defender came off the bench in the Lionesses’ goalless draw with the Czech Republic at the Amex Stadium on Tuesday evening.
It comes just two months after the 21-year-old made her return from a lower leg fracture, which had kept her side-lined for almost an entire year.
But with Morgan looking back to her best in the opening stages of the season, Taylor has backed her for a future at the top of the game at both Club and international level.
“It’s probably been a little bit overdue for Esme, unfortunately with her injury that kept her out for all of last season apart from the first few games,” the City boss said of Morgan’s international debut.
“She’s a really talented player, after working with her for a few weeks, I had really high hopes that she’s going to be the future of Manchester City and a future England captain - she has the potential to do that.
“She understands how hard she has to work in order to get there, but it’s a really nice reward for Esme after suffering a difficult period last season.
“She’s a really talented player, able to play in a number of positions. Hopefully that will be the first of many caps for her.”
The boss also revealed that Yui Hasegawa is close to making her City debut in Sunday’s Barclays Women’s Super League clash against Leicester.
Having joined the Club on transfer deadline day from West Ham, the Japanese international has been working hard behind the scenes to make herself available.
And, ahead of our first home match of the campaign, Taylor explained that Hasegawa could feature against the Foxes.
He also provided a positive update on the continued recoveries of defensive duo Ruby Mace and Alanna Kennedy.

Taylor said: “Ruby Mace is recovering, getting a little bit closer but won’t be available at the weekend, same as Alanna Kennedy.
“You’re never too certain [how people will return from international duty], particularly some players played lots of minutes, some not so much. I think everyone’s come back in good shape.
“Going into this period of games now if we can keep players healthy and on the pitch it gives us a good opportunity.
“[Yui] is very close. We’re really pleased to have her, she’s a player we’ve admired for a long time.
“She’s able to play in a number of positions in the midfield areas, she’s very bright, very intelligent.
“She’s a very fit player [as well]. That’s one thing I’ve really noticed, she covers the ground really well. She’s close and looked good in the training sessions.
“She had a slight injury so wasn’t able to go away with Japan.
“We managed to keep her here, worked hard with her and got her in a good position to be available for Sunday.”
