On this day in 2020, Gareth Taylor took charge of his first competitive fixture as Manchester City manager.

His reign began with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa in the Barclays Women’s Super League, with Georgia Stanway grabbing both goals at Villa Park.

The former City striker took charge ahead of the 2020/21 Barclays Women’s Super League season after cutting his teeth as a coach at various levels of the Club’s Academy.

2022/23 end of season awards

He has led the Blues to an FA Cup and Continental Cup success during his time at the Academy Stadium, taking charge of 109 matches in total.

Here we’ll take a look at some of the stats that define his time in charge to date...

Win ratio

Taylor has led City to victory in 79 of the 109 games he has overseen across all competitions. That’s a win percentage of 72%.

In the three seasons, the Blues have drawn just eight times and lost 22 games.

The bulk of the victories have come in the WSL, with league successes contributing to 47 of the 79 wins.

City have won 12 times in the FA Cup since Taylor took over, with the boss overseeing the last three rounds of the delayed 2019/20 competition and taking City to the trophy.

13 successes have come in the League Cup, with City famously lifting the trophy after beating Chelsea in the 2021/22 final.

Most appearances

Georgia Stanway and Ellen White equalled the most appearances in Taylor’s first season, missing just one of the 38 fixtures each.

In the second season, Alex Greenwood was an ever-present fixture in the side while Lauren Hemp missed just one match as we again played 38 times.

With 33 games in 2022/23, it’s Chloe Kelly and Bunny Shaw who lead the way in terms of matches played having featured 30 times.

Over the course of Taylor’s tenure, it’s been Greenwood who has been his most selected player. The defender has played 98 times in the last three campaigns.

Steph Houghton remains our record appearance maker, having played 232 times for City.

Goals scored

City have scored 310 times in Taylor’s 109 games in charge, at an average of 2.8 per game.

Our highest scoring season under the current boss was 2021/22 when we hit 112. In 2022/23 we scored 90 times, whereas in 2020/21 we scored 108 goals.

175 of those strikes have come in the WSL, with the 65 in 2020/21 the outstanding figure.

Bunny Shaw’s 50 goals in the last two seasons makes her the leading scorer during Taylor’s time in charge. Lauren Hemp is the next best in front of goal, having scored 41 times in the last three seasons.

At the other end of the pitch, we have conceded 96 goals in Taylor’s spell in charge so far.
