Hayley Raso thinks the rest period following the Barclays Women’s Super League's winter break will allow City to ‘come back flying’.

Gareth Taylor’s side return to the City Football Academy later this week ahead of our first encounter since mid-December against West Ham on Sunday 15 January.

City signed off for 2022 with nine wins from our last ten matches, while our last defeat in all competitions came back in September.

But after an intense fixture period leading up to the festive period, including playing three matches in the space of seven days in December, Australia international Raso believes the Christmas break has come at an opportune moment in the season.

The winger said: “I think we needed it [the winter break]. I think both as a team and personally, we were all looking forward to the break.

“You get into a run of games and you’re playing midweek and you’re playing on the weekend.

“So, to be able to break for a little bit, reset, recharge, and come back in [has been great].

“I think we’ll be flying once we get back in, ready to go again.”

City are one of the WSL’s form teams, winning six of our last seven league encounters, finding the net 18 times while conceding just four.

The only time we have dropped any points since September was in our most recent fixture; a pulsating 1-1 draw with fellow highflyers Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium.

Indeed, two defeats at the beginning of the campaign to Aston Villa and Chelsea now seem a distant memory, and Raso is proud of the progress she and her team-mates have made.

“It was a tough game against United before the break, but a really big occasion,” the winger reflected.

“We’ve been really pleased with the performances. We started off the season a little bit slow, but we’ve got the ball rolling.

“So, I’m really happy with how we’ve got on in the league leading up to Christmas.”
