The result wasn’t enough to top Group A1 however, due to Netherlands’ 4-0 defeat of Belgium at the same time.
England, going into the game level on points with Netherlands but with an inferior goal difference, knew they needed to rack up the goals to have any chance of progress and thought they had done enough when their match finished.
However, Jill Roord and Kerstin Casparij‘s Netherlands added their fourth in the final seconds of their game to end with 12 points and a positive goal difference of eight, snatching top spot by just one goal.

The night began excellently for City’s England contingent, with Greenwood heading Sarina Wiegman’s team into the lead in the 13th minute.
Goals followed regularly throughout the night thanks to Lauren James (2), Beth Mead, Fran Kirby and Lucy Bronze.
Khiara Keating and Chloe Kelly were unused substitutes for England while Sandy MacIver was on the bench for Scotland.
Earlier in the day, Laia Aleixandri’s Spain and Filippa Angeldahl’s Sweden played out an eight-goal thriller in Malaga.
Spain emerged 5-3 winners after an end-to-end clash with Aleixandri playing 75 minutes at the heart of defence for the hosts and Angeldahl putting in 62 minutes of work for Sweden.
The result sees Spain top the group with 15 points from their six games while Sweden end third with seven points.
