Esme Morgan came off the bench to earn her first senior England cap in a goalless draw with the Czech Republic.

The defender was introduced to the fray just after the hour at Brighton’s Amex Stadium, joining four of her City team-mates in an international friendly.

Morgan had previously been included in the Lionesses squad in September 2021, but her international bow was delayed due to a lower leg fracture which kept her out of the game for almost 12 months.

Alex Greenwood, Demi Stokes, Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp all started for Sarina Wiegman’s side on the south coast, with the latter going closest to breaking the deadlock a matter of minutes before Morgan’s introduction.

Playing in a central role, she struck the foot of the post after dinking the ball over the onrushing Olivie Lukasova, with Chelsea forward Fran Kirby unable to scramble the rebound home.

Kelly had also gone close in an entertaining first half, flashing a header just wide from Lucy Bronze’s cross from the left.

Victory would have been just rewards for the European champions, who dominated with 70% possession and 16 shots on the visiting goal.

Nonetheless, the draw do little to dampen what was unquestionably a memorable evening for Morgan, and a 24th match without defeat under Wiegman.

Elsewhere, Filippa Angeldahl was on target inside the first minute of Sweden’s friendly with France.

The midfielder’s strike set the tone for a dominant display from the Olympic silver medallists, as they ran out 3-0 victors in Gothenburg.

It was similarly good news for Julie Blakstad, who helped Norway beat Kerstin Casparij’s Holland.

Both City players started the match in the Hague, but it was the visitors who came away with the victory thanks to two second half goals, despite enjoying just 39% possession.

And Blakstad was in the thick of the action throughout, laying on Sophie Roman Haug for the game’s opening goal just after the hour.

Hayley Raso and Mary Fowler also picked up a win as Australia beat Denmark 3-1.

The Danes took an early lead in Viborg through Karen Holmgaard, but the visitors mounted a defiant second half response to claim victory.

Raso laid on Caitlin Foord for the Matildas’ equaliser, with the Arsenal forward adding her second of the game ten minutes later moments after Katrina Gorry had given them the lead.

Finally, Khiara Keating started between the sticks as England Under-19s drew 1-1 with Denmark.

The young Lionesses took a second half lead courtesy of Jessica Simpson, but were forced to settle for a share of the spoils when Marie Jorgensen levelled with 20 to play.
