Keira Walsh and Sam Mewis say they are delighted to see Laura Coombs gaining the recognition she deserves.

With three goals in three games - and not just any goals: a hat-trick of sensational wonderstrikes - Coombs has hit the headlines, shining in sky blue in her second season with the Club.

Another glorious effort in Saturday’s Manchester Derby ensured the 29-year-old, who started just one FA Women’s Super League game last season, remains in the spotlight.

Manager Gareth Taylor has spoken highly of the in-form midfielder in recent weeks, hailing her ‘intelligence, composure and technical ability.’

Her teammates have been equally impressed, and Walsh asserts she could not be more thrilled.

“It’s been really nice for the girls to see how well Coombsy’s doing,” the 23-year-old City fan declared.

“She’s a player everybody loves - she’s such a nice person to be around and she always has a smile on her face, whether she’s playing or not.

“That really helps with team spirit. Whether you’re playing or not, you want your teammates to play well.

“She’s looking confident and she’s scored three great goals. Long may it continue.

“It’s been nice to see so many different faces on the pitch. Jess Park has been getting more minutes as well and hopefully, that will continue.

“She’s going to be a massive player for us and for England in the future.

“Squad rotation will be so important this year.

“It’s probably something we’ve not had as much in the past but going into a season and wanting to challenge for every trophy, it’s natural you’re going to need a lot of different players.”

Summer recruit and World Cup winner Sam Mewis - Player of the Match in her first Manchester Derby at the weekend - echoed those sentiments, agreeing Coombs’ form showcases the exceptional squad depth available.

After all, keeping midfield maestros Jill Scott, Caroline Weir and Rose Lavelle out of the starting XI certainly takes some doing!

“For so many people to have played over the last couple of weeks - and scored - is so good for everybody,” Mewis concurred.

Laura Coombs has come in and scored three goals - she’s doing so well.

“It speaks so much about the depth of the team - how talented everyone is throughout the roster!

“It’s something the Club has tried to build over the years and could be a weapon for us moving forward.”
