The Lionesses face the tournament newcomers on Saturday 22 July, with kick-off set for 10:30 (UK) in Brisbane.
England enter the competition as European champions and are tipped by many to go far at the World Cup.
And while Coombs highlighted the positive atmosphere in the camp ahead of their curtain-raiser, she admits that she and her team-mates are well aware of their opponents’ threats this weekend.
“We’ve obviously identified [Melchie Dumornay], one of the players who’s signed for Lyon. Pace and power, she could be a problem, but we think we’ve got enough in our squad to deal with it,” the midfielder said on England’s Lionesses Down Under daily show.
“Across the board they look like real athletes, that’s the kind of game were expecting, a physical battle.
“It’s good. Training’s been going pretty smoothly, everyone’s working hard and you can tell everyone really wants it to get under way. Everyone feels ready for it.”
Coombs’ standout performances for City across the season saw her called up to the England squad for the first time in over two years in February 2023.
She’s been a regular in the squad since then and admits the feeling remains as special as ever to represent her country, especially on the biggest stage.
Laura added: “We work so hard and put a lot of life on hold for training and matches.
“It just makes it feel all worthwhile when you’re selected and are able to come to a major tournament. It’s amazing, and to put the England shirt on in general as well.
“Because it hadn’t happened for a while [being selected], I didn’t think about it for a long time for my own sake.
“But I always knew if I could string a few good performances together I’d have a good chance.”
