Lauren Hemp says she is relishing the opportunity to test herself against the world’s best players at the SheBelieves Cup.

The youngster, who has been nominated for the Barclays FA Women’s Super League Player of the Month, earned her second selection for the tournament in the USA, having been invited as a training player as the Lionesses lifted the trophy for the first time in 2019.

Now a regular starter for City – and one of the FA Women’s Super League leaders’ most prominent attacking threats – Hemp is ready to challenge for gametime as Phil Neville’s side look to retain their silverware, facing the cream of the crop in the USA, Japan and Spain.

“I’m really excited,” she said. “Last year, I was there as a training player but now I’m looking forward to being in the full squad and I’m excited for the next few games.

“I loved being in the moment when we won it last year. I’m hoping to lift the trophy with them this year.

“I’ve love to play in America too – it’s something I haven’t done yet – and against some big teams.

“I’m really excited about the USA game. They’ve won the World Cup and they’re a big team with big players – Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan… I’m looking forward to seeing them in the flesh and it would be amazing if I could get on the pitch with them.

“I’ve only watched them on TV so I’d love the opportunity to do that!

“It would be great to get a couple more caps and possibly a goal – that would be nice!”

Earning a reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in the country, Hemp is becoming accustomed to making her mark on the big stage.

The teenager bagged crucial goals in February’s two title heavyweight clashes, netting the winner against Arsenal and a pivotal equaliser in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Chelsea.

Heading into the international break in excellent form, Hemp hopes she can continue to impress, soaking up the experience, encouragement and advice of her peers.

“I’ve had a couple of good games,” she reflected, ever modest, “especially against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea – big ones with positive results.

“I love scoring and important games like those are where it counts. I’m hoping to get more of them in the future so I can help the team as much as possible.

“My teammates have all sent positive messages about my call-up – they’re really proud of how far I’ve come. I have to push on now.

“They’ve told me to keep doing what I’m doing and to be positive and keep attacking the full-backs, working hard to get the results I want.

“The managers have said the same and they’ve told me to enjoy it, taking every moment I can.

“I’m really looking forward to the experience.”

England face the USA on Friday 6 March (midnight UK time), Japan on Sunday 8 March (6:15pm) and Spain on Wednesday 11 March (9:15pm).
