GARETH TAYLOR PREVIEW
The boss addressed the media on Friday afternoon and was asked to provide a squad update following a few knocks to various players in our Champions League win over Barcelona.
“With Naomi [Layzell] we just need a bit longer to assess, it requires further investigation but I think it’s positive compared to what we anticipated at first,” began Taylor.
“It looked nasty how she reacted to putting her foot down on the ground. But it’s a positive one in that respect that we don’t think it’s anything that will keep her out too long but we need longer to assess her properly.
“Laia [Aleixandri] was fine. I’ve been asked quite a bit because of the action but it was a dead leg. She’s absolutely fine and was actually annoyed at me for taking her off. She’s okay and will come back into the team today as well.”
On the threat Liverpool pose on Sunday and whether they can be title challengers, Taylor said:
“I don’t see any reason why not. I think sometimes you can see a team has the resource and recruitment they’ve done and Matt Beard being there for a while, establishing it in his way.
“Liverpool, Brighton, Aston Villa, they’re probably showing more capability than what their points tally shows, so there’s some healthy competition in there at the moment.
“When I look at the calendar and look at our fixtures and other team’s fixtures, it’s really difficult to see any fixture that is favourable for you. Everyone’s fighting so hard.
“We played a top level opponent, one of the best in the world, the other night and this game is equally as difficult for various reasons. It’s really good for us that it’s at Anfield, that’s fantastic and a good experience for the girls. More and more now these players, not just ours but all players in the WSL are experiencing playing in the big stadiums and in front of packed audiences like we had the other night.”
LAST TIME OUT
City secured a superb midweek victory over Barcelona in the Champions League.
Goals from Naomi Layzell and Bunny Shaw secured a well-deserved 2-0 win over the European champions at a sold out Joie Stadium.
It was a wonderful, landmark moment for Taylor’s side and continued our unbeaten start to the 2024/25 campaign.
Last weekend, the Blues also beat West Ham United 2-0 to move top of the WSL.
Previous meeting
Goals from Lauren Hemp, Jess Park and a brace from Bunny Shaw gave City a 4-1 WSL win over Liverpool last March.
The game, held at Tranmere Rovers’ Prenton Park, was watched by 3,377 fans and the hosts’ only consolation came late on via a Khiara Keating own goal.
