Team news

City have received a welcome boost with the news Esme Morgan has returned to on-pitch training.

The defender, who has not featured since September’s league visit of Tottenham Hotspur, having suffered a lower leg fracture, shared the news on our Matchday Live show as a pundit for our men’s FA Cup trip to Southampton.

And previewing Wednesday night’s FA Women’s Super League clash against Everton, Taylor confirmed the 21-year-old has stepped up her recovery.

Having had the opportunity to rotate in Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final win over the Toffees, Taylor was asked whether he would ring the changes once more for the league encounter with another game against Birmingham looming at the weekend, replying that he would make a decision after Tuesday’s training session.

Gareth Taylor preview

“Playing [a team] back-to-back is interesting. Usually, it happens where you are at home and then away. We are in the situation where there are two home games and two different competitions.

“It’s strange but quite exciting in terms of what you are going to see from the opposition. We are in a pretty good place in that so far.

“Who knows [how Everton will approach the game]? I think if we hadn’t broken the deadlock with Lauren [Hemp] in the first half, they might have looked at it and thought they had been successful.

“That is the interesting thing in terms of the unpredictability of it. The unpredictability is the exciting part for us. That’s the challenge and it’s why we play the game.

“I think it’s good and for us it has come at the right time. It’s not early in the season when we are a new team coming together.

“The players are adapting really well and like I said on Sunday, they are finding the solutions really well.

“I think it’s something the players will enjoy and we’re ready for challenge. It’s a good opportunity. It’s good in that respect that it is a home game. We are in a good vein of form.

“It is important we focus on the performance. We are in good shape and we just need to make sure we maintain the high standards.”

Previous Meeting

City cruised through to the semi-finals of the Women’s FA Cup with Sunday’s thumping 4-0 win over Everton.

A brilliant Lauren Hemp brace, Caroline Weir‘s latest wondergoal and an injury-time Ellen White effort fired Gareth Taylor‘s side through to the last four in a superb display at the Academy Stadium.

The triumph continued our impeccable record against the Toffees and impressive run of reaching the semi-final stages of the competition, having done so in every season since 2015.

The draw for the last four takes place on Monday 21 March from 18:30 on BBC News’ Sportsday show.

Form Guide

City come into Wednesday’s clash in sparking form, winning 14 of our last 16 matches in all competitions, including our last six on the spin and Sunday’s 4-0 win over the Toffees.

Stats

  • City have a 100% record against Everton in all competitions, having won all 19 meetings between the two sides.
  • Our 11 FA WSL victories marks the most occasions one side have played another in the competition while winning on each occasion. We have won more FA WSL matches against Everton (11) than we have against any other side, while we’ve only scored more goals against Bristol City (42) than we have against the Toffees (30).
  • Gareth Taylor‘s side have only lost one of our last nine WSL games (W7 D1, losing 1-0 to Chelsea in February), the only game in this run in which we’ve failed to score.
  • Our sequences average more passes (3.8) and are longer on average (10.9 seconds) than any other side in the FA WSL this season. Comparatively, Everton average three passes per sequence, with sequences lasting 7.4 seconds on average.
  • Everton have lost all seven of their FA WSL matches away to the two Manchester clubs, beaten five times on the road by City and twice by United.
  • The Merseysiders have lost five of their last seven league matches (W2), with a defeat last time out against Chelsea ending Chris Roberts’ two-game winning run, Everton’s joint-longest of the season so far. Everton are currently eight points worse off than they were at the same stage of last season (17 points, 25 last season).
  • Everton are unbeaten across their last four games in the FA WSL when playing away from home in midweek (Tues, Weds, Thurs – W3 D1), with these four games each coming in a different season.
  • City have amassed an expected goals total of 11.8 from the open play sequences that Lauren Hemp has been involved in this season – the only player in the FA WSL this season to be involved in more dangerous sequences of play cumulatively is Chelsea’s Sam Kerr (13.3 expected goals from her sequences).
  • Ellen White has been directly involved in 12 goals (seven goals, five assists) in her 14 WSL matches against Everton – only against Liverpool has she been involved in more in the competition (15, seven goals, eight assists).
  • Janine Beckie has scored three goals in her five WSL games against Everton, as many goals as she’s scored against all other opponents in the competition combined (one each against Tottenham, Brighton and Bristol City).
  • Kenza Dali has taken the most shots of any player yet to score a goal in the FA WSL this season (22), while teammate Valérie Gauvin has the highest expected goals figure of any player yet to score (2.6).
