Having recorded a hard fought 1-0 win over Portugal before earning a respectable 1-1 draw with reigning champions USA in their opening two fixtures, Oranje needed only a point to reach the knockout stages.
And they did just that thanks to goals from Lieke Martens, Katja Snoeijs, Esmee Brugts (two), Roord (two) and Danielle van de Donk with City’s midfielder starting at the Forsyth Barr Stadium and Kerstin Casparij playing the entirety of the second half.
Despite a bright start from Vietnam, it was the Netherlands who broke the deadlock inside eight minutes when a precise, diagonal ball from Dominique Janssen found Martens inside the box who sent a sublime, looping shot into the back of the net.
Looking for goals to help boost their goal difference and aid their quest for Group E’s summit, the European nation doubled their lead minutes later when Snoeijs received a well-timed pass from Van de Donk and coolly slid home.
Inside 18 minutes, two became three, when Brugts curled a wonderful effort from 25-yards out into the far corner – leaving Trần Thị Kim Thanh stranded between the sticks.
The Asian team were reeling, and having netted in her nation’s draw with USA, Roord then doubled her tally in the competition when Janssen weaved down the left-hand side and whipped an inviting ball into the box where our midfielder expertly volleyed into an empty net.
But the Netherlands weren’t finished there in the first half, as, on the cup of half-time, continual provider Van de Donk scored her maiden World Cup goal by latching onto a rebounded effort and rifling into the roof of the net.
Only 10 minutes after the interval, Brugts repeated her trick from the first 45 when collecting the ball on the left and venomous curling an effort into the far corner from range to make it six.
Andries Jonker’s side were well on their way to winning Group G with Portugal and USA deadlocked at 0-0, and they thought they had furthered their lead when Martins fired home, but the assistant referee raised her flag for offside.
The Netherlands didn’t have to wait long until their seventh arrived and it was City’s Roord who delivered it when she ghosted into the box and nodded a header past Thị Kim Thanh.
The rout represents Oranje’s largest-ever Women’s World Cup win and they win now face the second place team of Group G (Sweden,Italy, South Africa or Argentina) on Sunday 6 August at 3:00 (UK)
