New Women's Director of Football Nils Nielsen believes City aren’t far from the finished article.

The Dane’s new role, subject to work permit approval, has him overseeing coach and player development, while leading on player recruitment across the entirety of the women and girls’ pathway at the Academy Stadium.

Gareth Taylor has formed an exciting young squad with an important experienced core in 2022/23, which has taken notable scalps in the form of Chelsea and Arsenal en route to our push for the WSL top three.

Indeed, Nielsen has been impressed with what he’s seen so far, with the former Denmark head coach assured we have all the ingredients needed to compete at the highest level.

Although the future at the Club is undoubtedly bright, Nielsen also explained how there needs to be a measured approach to player development, including giving individuals time to reach new heights.

“In my opinion, the atmosphere in the team, the way they are working is very very good, already,” he declared.

“We have a strong and very good team situation.

“We have weapons, we have perhaps the strongest winger group in the country. I’m thinking ‘okay let’s build on that one’.

“But, we still need to score the goals and make sure we can get the results and that takes a little bit of time to develop the consistency of a younger team.

“That means that we need to be a little bit patient with this because we actually have players with huge potential, in my opinion.”

Across the 2022/23 campaign, City have been embroiled in a thrilling title race and battle for UEFA Champions League qualification.

Heading into our final two games of the term, we currently sit fourth, but level on points with third-placed Arsenal (44) and five behind second-placed Chelsea.

Both of the London sides also reached the Champions League semi-finals this term, while Manchester United sit atop the WSL table.

But Nielsen doesn’t think wholesale changes are needed for Taylor’s side to add to our impressive haul of eight major trophies.

He added: “It is clear, when you want to compete with teams who have some of the best players in the world in different positions, then you need to also accept the fact that when you have younger players in those positions, they’re not going to be stable over a whole season as the other ones are.

“We are still working on bringing the consistency to the team, but I don’t think necessarily that we need to change that much.”
