It is with deep regret that the Club can announce the passing of Manchester City's oldest player George Smith, aged 92.

Between 1946 and 1951 George notched an impressive 75 goals in 166 appearances following signing for the Blues from Adelphi lads’ club in Salford before continuing his fine goal-scoring form at Chesterfield.

The inside forward’s fascinating career also included stints for the Army and FA representative teams however George was badly injured whilst on duty in East Africa during the Second World War following a machine gun attack by the South African air force.

Determined to prove he could still play at the highest level following his injury, George regained full fitness and showed no further signs of affliction, particularly in 1946 when he scored all four goals in a famous 4-1 Manchester derby victory for the Blues.

Thoughts of everyone at MCFC are with the family and friends of George.
