Vincent Kompany collected his Etihad Player of the Month champagne for February - but the City star couldn't escape being reminded of the toughest tussle of his career.

His consistently fine performances were recognised by the Blues fans’ vote and Robert Williams of Wrexham won the random draw to make the presentation at Carrington training complex.

But Vincent was put on the spot when Robert - accompanied by his son Richard and grandchildren Leah, 10, and Thomas, four - asked who had been the hardest opponent he had ever faced.

Keeping up the Welsh connection, he recalled: “I was only 17 and was up against John Hartson. He was 110 kilos, and I was 10 kilos less than I am now. So it was a tough battle!”

Vince scooped the award with 38 per cent of the votes cast on our official sponsors Etihad’s website, finishing ahead of Craig Bellamy (19 per cent) and Wayne Bridge (11 per cent).

He said: “I’m delighted to accept the award - the supporters’ opinion counts for a lot with all the players, and for them to choose me ahead of such tough opposition is great.”

Leah, who was inducted into the Junior Blues at just three days old, told Vincent that striker Carlos Tevez was her favourite player - but kindly added that Vincent was also a favourite!

Versatile Kompany joins previous winners Craig Bellamy (August and September), Martin Petrov (October), Shay Given (November), and Carlos Tevez (December and January).
