After a season long neck and neck battle, that came down to the final game, City lost the league championship title to Liverpool on the last day of the season - by one point.
The Blues exited the FA Cup in the 5th round after losing 1-0 to Leeds at Elland Road. Manchester United went on to beat Liverpool 2-1 in the final that year.
Manager: Tony Book
Book had a five year tenure as manager, from 1974–1979.
The Blues finished in eighth place in his first full season in charge – an improvement on the previous campaign, when the team finished 14th.
In 1976, Book’s City side won the League Cup Final, making him the first person to win the competition as both player and manager.
He remained in charge until 1979, and then became a loyal stalwart to the club, in several other roles, until 1997.
Captain : Mike Doyle
The most decorated City player, Doyle made his first team debut against Cardiff City in May 1964, at just 17.
In the 1967/8 season, he was handed the No. 4 jersey and formed part of the backbone of the side that won the title that season.
He went on to add another two league cups, an FA Cup, two Charity Shields and a European Cup Winners’ Cup, to his list of accolades.

Key player : Joe Royle
Book bought Royle for £170,000 in 1974.
After being the top goal scorer at Everton for five seasons, he went on to claim further honours at City, playing an instrumental role in the League Cup win of 1976.
He left Maine Road in 1977 to join Bristol City.
