City’s emphatic 4-1 win over Sunderland saw Oliver Reiss's side return to the Under-18 Premier League North summit.

Determined to move back to the top of the table, the City youngsters took an early lead through a Teddie Lamb penalty.

Christian Dunbar-McDonald then added his name to the scoresheet with a trademark right-footed, curling finish on 36 minutes in what a bright return from injury for the winger.

Dante Headley completed a clinical opening 45 minutes with a first-time finish for his fourth goal of the season.

Kylan Midwood got off the mark less than 10 minutes into the second half with a fine volley at the back post to further extend our lead.

Lewis Campbell pulled one back for the visitors with just 15 left to play, with City caught off guard playing out from the back.

However, City showed great maturity and composure across the final minutes to see out a well-deserved 4-1 win for three key points on home soil.

WHAT HAPPENED

City charged out of the gates on a wet and windy Tuesday afternoon and quickly had a penalty claim waved away after Harrison Miles felt his strike from halfway inside the Sunderland box struck an opponent’s arm.

Kylan Midwood then tested Sunderland goalkeeper Finley Roberston, but the City winger’s shot flew straight into the shot-stopper’s arms.

It was a sign of things to come, and after weathering a short Sunderland storm, City had a penalty.

FROM THE SPOT : Teddie Lamb fires City ahead.

A perfectly weighted pass over the top by Finlay Gorman sent Teddie Lamb through. On his shoulder was Black Cats defender Charlie Forsyth. As Lamb entered the opposition’s box, Forsyth put in a late, sliding tackle and as a result referee Joe Cunningham pointed to the spot.

City’s number nine, Lamb, converted the penalty on 21 minutes for his 18th goal in 17 league games.

A heavy touch by Kaden Braithwaite in the centre of City’s half saw James Barker pounce on 25 minutes.

HE'S BACK! : Christian Dunbar-McDonald returns to action with a goal.

He spotted City’s Ben Vickery off his line and went for an audacious 40-yard effort, but, to the City captain’s relief, the ball flew kindly over the bar.

Christian Dunbar-McDonald, on his first start back from injury, curled a clinical right-footed effort into the back of the Sunderland net after he was played down the left by Braithwaite, with City hitting our stride.

To complete an impressive opening 45 minutes, Dante Headley then made it 3-0 with a close-range first-time finish after Midwood’s initial effort had been cleared.

FANTASTIC FOUR : Kylan Midwood scores City's fourth of the afternoon.

City goalkeeper Vickery was called into action twice to deny Bayley Hester and then Wess Brown inside the opening seven minutes of the second half as Sunderland searched for a way back into the game.

But with our first set of shots on target after the restart, City registered a fourth.

An initial effort by Dunbar-McDonald was saved by the outstretched hand of Robertson, with the second guided home by Midwood on the rebound on 53 minutes.

SHOT STOPPER : A huge performance by Ben Vickery.

Lamb was denied by a fantastic save by Robertson after the City number nine latched onto a dangerous, low cross by Headley inside the six-yard box as City looked for more.

However, a shift in momentum saw Lewis Campbell pull one back for Sunderland after the Black Cats’ high press caught City by surprise.

But it proved to be a mere consolation as City took the sting out of Sunderland’s late rally to see out an important 4-1 win for three vital points in the race for the title.

TOGETHER : Another important win in the race for the North title.
