The 18-year old fired City level five minutes after the restart to make it 1-1 and cancel out Mikael Mandron’s 12th minute opener.
Simon Davies made three changes from the side that beat Norwich with Cameron Humphreys, Aleix Garcia and Bersant Celina coming in for George Glendon, Rodney Kongolo and David Faupala.
The young Blues created the first chance of the game with six minutes played when Garcia picked out the run of Isaac Buckley with a 30-yard pass.
The 17-year old controlled the ball before releasing the overlapping Celina, who saw his low shot palmed away by Maksymilian Stryjek.
The next chance in the game fell to the away side and they took it with Mandron finding space in the area before firing past the outstretched hand of Angus Gunn in the City goal.
Davies’ side responded well to going behind and could have been level within six minutes. Captain Kean Bryan drove towards goal before unleashing a 25-yard thunderbolt that troubled Stryjek.
Both teams were involved in a midfield battle following the early flurry of chances as both sides cancelled each other out to and the Black Cats heading into half time in the lead.
City came out of the blocks firing after the restart and drew themselves level in the 50th minute.
Sunderland failed to clear their lines and the ball fell to Garcia on the edge of the area, who sent a low driven effort into the back of the net with his first touch.
Following the goal, another midfield battle ensued as both sides looked to find their second goal of the afternoon.
Davies made his one and only chance in the 72nd minute when Faupala was brought on to replace Humphreys, which saw City move to a 4-4-2 formation.
The change almost brought a winner for City as the young French striker turned his man on the edge of the area before seeing his shot blocked by a last ditch challenge from Thomas Beadling.
Four minutes of added time were indicated at the end of the second half and both sides saw it out to share the points.
