Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the first home game of the season against Everton on Monday.

Ilkay Gundogan returned from an eight-month layoff to play 20 minutes of City’s friendly with Girona on Tuesday and is back in contention for a place in the squad.

New signing Benjamin Mendy, yet to make his City bow, is in the final stage of his recovery from a thigh problem, and Fabian Delph is also closing in on a return to full fitness.

“They are good, they are fit,” Guardiola said of his squad.

“There are no injuries. Ilkay came back for a few minutes after seven, eight months.

“Mendy is at last part of his rehabilitation – still not 100 percent but he’s almost done.

“And Fabian Delph, too, is the same position as Mendy, so we have all the players fit.”

Gundogan arrived at City last summer but suffered a knee injury in the game against Watford in December that saw him miss the remainder of the 2016/17 campaign.

It was a cruel blow for the German who was finding his best form having scored two against West Brom in October before another double against Barcelona in the famous 3-1 win at the Etihad a few days later.

Guardiola says he has responded well to his rehabilitation – but admits his return to the first team needs to managed carefully.

“He [Gundogan] played a few mins in Girona, so we will see,” he said. “He is training really well. He needs time, confidence.

“When you have the problems he has had in the past two years, he has to be 100 percent sure he is ready.

“But he played a few minutes and that is the first step.”

Meanwhile, Guardiola has explained Kyle Walker‘s absence from the squad that travelled to Girona.

Walker, signed from Tottenham this summer, was given some time off because his wife is due to give birth.

“His wife is pregnant and he is almost a father again,” the boss said.

“That’s why he stayed here to wait for a beautiful moment.”
