John Stones is close to a return to the Manchester City first team.

The defender, who had been in outstanding form, damaged his hamstring in City’s win away at Leicester last month and hasn’t played since.

But Pep Guardiola says he is entering the final phase of his recovery and expects him back within a fortnight.

“He’s much, much better,” Pep said.

“I think he’s at four weeks [of his recovery]. The doctor said he would be out between four and six.

“In one or two weeks, he will be ready.”

Meanwhile, Vincent Kompany is also nearing a return to training.

The Belgian defender went off at half time during City’s win at Old Trafford last week with a muscle problem.

Guardiola admits he won’t be ready for Saturday’s showdown with Tottenham at the Etihad but says he is much better and will return to action soon.

“He is much better,” Guardiola said.

“He has a little problem.

“I don’t know if tomorrow he will be fit but hopefully in the next days he will be ready.”
