Come in number five and six...
5 Buzzing Bernardo
Bernardo Silva was an effervescent presence on and off the pitch for City throughout the 17/18 season; a footballer whose sheer joy at playing the game transmitted to an instant feelgood factor from fans.
An early capture in the summer 2017 transfer window, Bernardo went on to make the most appearances (53) of any first-team player, an excellent achievement in itself given the star quality at boss Pep Guardiola’s disposal.
When you add nine goals and 10 assists into the mix in all competitions, plus technique and a touch that had the crowd cooing, it was a brilliant first campaign for the affable Portuguese midfielder.
6 Ederson cool
“The most important thing is he is so calm. When he concedes a goal he is quiet and when he make an extraordinary save he is quiet. His reaction is the same. He is so stable.”
So said Pep Guardiola of goalkeeper Ederson during the Brazilian’s fantastic first season with the Blues.
The 24-year-old has an uncanny knack of receiving the ball in his penalty area under apparent pressure, only to calmly find a man in space with a gently rolled or clipped pass. His mighty left leg is also capable of creating direct chances for forwards - he literally holds the Guinness World Record for the longest football kick.
Oh, and he’s not bad with his hands either - notable saves came against United in the Old Trafford derby and from the penalty spot against Crystal Palace on New Year’s Eve. What a future he has.
