Leroy Sane believes Manchester City’s improvement under Pep Guardiola makes us contenders to win this season’s Champions League.

City drew Liverpool in Friday morning’s draw, with the games at Anfield on April 4 and at the Etihad Stadium on April 10 - either side of the Manchester derby.

It’s a tough schedule but City’s form has been outstanding this season, with 40 wins from 47 matches in all competitions, and Sane says we now have the quality to compete with the very best in Europe.

“This year, we’re a real strong team, and we understand Pep Guardiola’s philosophy, have improved a lot and know what he wants from us,” the German said in Abu Dhabi ahead of the draw.

“The Champions League is a really tough tournament and every single game is really special and difficult. But we have a good chance to come to the final and win the Champions League. But it will be really difficult.”

It’s been a fine season for Sane personally, with the 22-year-old scoring 12 and assisting a further 15 across four competitions.

Those are impressive numbers and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was in the mix for the end-of-season individual awards.

Sane says he doesn’t set himself specific personal targets, but admits he wants to continue improving year on year.

“I didn’t have a special target,” he said. “When I arrived, I wanted to be settled in Manchester, to improve on my weaknesses and, with Pep Guardiola, I’m looking step-to-step.

“This season I’ve scored more goals than last season and then the next step would be really good for me if I could keep doing it for this season and then next season hopefully score more.”
