“Bernardo is a great player. We have a great relationship. For me, he is one of the best players in the world,” he said at his first press conference.

“It’s a pleasure to play with him.

“Ederson is a year older than me, so we never played in the same team at Benfica, but I admire him. He is a great goalkeeper.

“City have great quality players, so I will try and bring my own quality and improve on my weaknesses.

“I believe a lot in this club. Now and in the future it will be one of the top clubs in the world.”

Under Pep Guardiola City have built a squad of young, technically gifted, athletic players and at 25, Cancelo fits that mould.

The boss has also worked alongside Txiki Begiristain to ensure he has a number of options in each position and our latest signing joins a team where Kyle Walker has established himself as first-choice right-back.

However, the Portugal international believes working alongside a player with such ability can only benefit his game as he bids to meet his lofty personal ambitions.

“I love the City project and what it offers,” he added. “As a player I like new challenges.

“I’m aware of the competition, Walker is a great player but the more competition the more chance you have to grow as a player.

“I dream of being the best player in my position and this is good place to achieve that.”

Cancelo’s ambition is fuelled by more than professional aspirations.

Aged 18 he suffered the agonising loss of his mother, Filomena, who died in a car crash.

Six years later Filomena continues to influence her son’s life and he admits that since that day he has endeavoured to ensure he makes the most of his talent.

“My mum has always been the base of my life,” Cancelo explained.

“When I lost her I was determined to make my dream come true. In the last four years I have been at four different clubs, always improving.

“I am always fighting to be the best I can and I think I can do that here.”
