And though 43 years have now passed since Dennis Tueart carved his name in football folklore by producing a moment of individual magic, for many Blues the England man’s spectacular overhead kick remains as fresh in the mind today as it did back in 1976.
Already a Wembley winner with Sunderland, having been part of the Wearsiders team who shocked Leeds to win the 1973 FA Cup, Dennis was back at the Twin Towers just three years later as part of a vibrant, exciting City side assembled by Tony Book.

Pitted against Newcastle United in front of a raucous 100,000 crowd, the Blues had made the perfect start through teenage wing sensation Peter Barnes’ early opener.
The Magpies however levelled through former Manchester United forward Alan Gowling to leave the game poised on a knife-edge.
That was the cue for Tueart to produce a dazzling moment of brilliance which not only only secured our second League Cup triumph but which also took its place in the pantheon of truly great Wembley moments.
At first there appeared to be little danger for Newcastle as full-back Willie Donachie whipped in a cross from the left.
Even when the ball was met by Tommy Booth’s header there was little inkling of what was to come.
But as the ball looped into the Newcastle box, Tueart embarked on his moment of individual brilliance, launching a perfectly-timed and executed overhead kick that met the ball sweetly.

His subsequent kick powered past helpless Newcastle keeper Mike Mahoney into the right-hand corner of the net to send the City fans into raptures.
It was a true Rhapsody in Blue that gained even more added lustre during our long wait to add more silverware.
The last decade, of course, has seen a glorious new chapter of success evolve for the Club.
But Tueart’s piece of magic deservedly ranks one of the greatest individual moments in City’s star-studded history.
