To add to the sense of occasion there was also a perfect symmetry in the way both sides secured the respective first pieces of silverware this season.
On Saturday afternoon, Nick Cushing’s City side beat Arsenal 4-2 on penalties on Saturday at Bramall Lane to win the Club’s third Continental Cup after the two sides had finished goalless over 120 minutes.
Blues goalkeeper Karen Bardsley emerged as our hero in the shoot-out, making two crucial saves to help City to Conti Cup glory.
The following day, Pep Guardiola’s side followed suit in almost identical fashion. After 120 minutes against Chelsea had also finished goalless, we prevailed after an equally nerve-racking penalty shoot-out win at Wembley.
Raheem Sterling coolly despatched the crucial spot kick to seal a 4-3 win on penalties and so seal our fourth Carabao Cup in six seasons.
The duel achievements capped what, so far, been a superb first two months in 2019 for the two sides.

Nick Cushing’s women’s squad are still unbeaten in the calendar year and are still in the hunt to make it a clean sweep of domestic silverware.
We are also through to the quarter-finals of the FA Women’s Cup where we will play host to Liverpool next month.
And the Blues are also top of the FA Women’s Super League standings, holding a two-point advantage on Arsenal, though the Gunners do have two games in hand.
Meanwhile having secured the first prize of the English men’s game, Pep Guardiola’s squad are vying for success on three other fronts.
City are through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup where we will travel to Championship side Swansea City in mid March.
The Blues will also take a 3-2 lead into the second leg of our Champions League last 16 tie with Schalke.
And with 11 games of the Premier League campaign remaining, City are in second place just a point behind leaders Liverpool.
It means the portents are set for what could be a thrilling and even more successful finish to an already memorable season.
